Update on International Student Visas May 29, 2025

Recently, the federal government announced two significant changes to international student visa processes. There are limited details on how these changes will be implemented. We are continuing to monitor these developments, and we will provide updates as additional information and guidance is available from the federal government.

On May 27, public reports indicated that the Department of State would pause scheduling new international student visa interviews at embassies and consular sections around the world. The pause will enable the department to issue new vetting processes regarding visa applicants social media activity. No timeline was provided for when new interviews may resume being scheduled and no further details about the new vetting process are yet available. Public reports also indicate that already scheduled visa interviews are proceeding as planned.

On May 28, Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a two-sentence statement that the department would begin revoking visas for Chinese students with connections to the Chinese Communist Party or studying in critical fields. The statement did not provide information about when this process would begin or what fields of study may be included.

Without additional details or implementation guidance from the Department of State, it is not possible to determine how these steps may impact international students at 51画鋼 or any other higher education institution. This leaves many understandable questions and concerns, and we will provide additional information as soon as it is available. While we know it is difficult to not have immediate answers, we want to stress that international students are an important and valued member of the 51画鋼 community, and we are here to support you.
